Sept. 25, 2025: Science on Tap: Shining a Light on the Brain: Guiding Animal Behavior Using Light

September 25, 2025: Science on Tap: Shining a Light on the Brain: Guiding Animal Behavior Using Light Flyer. 5:30 p.m. at Rising Silo Brewery in Blacksburg, Virginia.

September 25, 5:30 p.m.: What if you could control the brain with light?

Join Ainul Huda, a graduate student in the School of Neuroscience at Virginia Tech, for a hands-on exploration of optogenetics. This cutting-edge neuroscience technique uses light to activate specific neurons in real-time.

In this illuminating session, you’ll see how researchers use optogenetics to study brain function and behavior with incredible precision. Even better, you will be in control: using safe, low-power red lasers to shine light on fruit flies and trigger specific behaviors. Watch as flies stop in their tracks when “sweet taste” neurons are activated, spin, or even walk backward — all at your signal.

Come shine a light and see how brains, behaviors, and breakthroughs come together.

Free and open to the public. Hosted by the Center for Communicating Science at Virginia Tech and Virginia Tech's chapter of Sigma Xi.
